The purpose of the Governmental Affairs Division is to develop a public policy agenda and educate policy makers on the issues that will move the Greater Fort Smith Region forward on the local, state, and federal level. This is mainly done through the initiatives below.



One of the primary responsibilities of the Fort Smith Chamber of Commerce is to be an advocate for regional businesses as it relates to legislative affairs. Through the Governmental Affairs division the Chamber has expanded member participation in this important initiative. The division has concentrated on strengthening relationships with local, state and federal delegation by visiting them regularly as well inviting them to regional events. This is just the beginning. More is planned for 2012, so stay tuned.

Initiate “Fort Smith Only” Washington, D.C. Fly-In Event
Facilitate a trip to Washington, D.C. of Fort Smith business leaders to lobby issues specific to the region and build relationships with the Congressional Delegation.
Get Involved!
Statewide Relations
Encourage participation of the Greater Fort Smith Region at statewide events in an effort to increase the region’s visibility across the state.
Develop Agenda for 2013 Arkansas General Assembly Session
Research issues and develop a public policy agenda to be shared with legislators during the 2013 session.
Begin Data Work for State Commission Appointments
The Governor of Arkansas continuously makes appointments to state boards and commissions from all across the state. Volunteers and staff will work to create a database of these boards and commissions and when they have openings will make an effort to get people from the Greater Fort Smith Region appointed.
