The Education & Quality of Place Division is currently seeking nominations for the 2011 Frontier Achievement Awards. The 30th Annual Frontier Achievement Awards will be presented on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at the River Front Park Events Building. At this time, the Education & Quality of Place Division leaders of the Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce will recognize various individuals, businesses, or industries who have made an outstanding contribution to the historical development of our city and/or helped to preserve the heritage of Fort Smith. Any citizen, business or industry of Fort Smith who meets the above criteria may be nominated to receive this award. Nominations must be recieved by Wednesday, April 6, 2011. It’s hard to really define all the elements of “Quality of Place.” Really it encompasses every aspect of a community and your life. The Qualify of Place team has been lead by an inspiring group of individuals that just jumped in and started working on several aspects that were of interest and importance to them and they continue to press on. There really isn’t a start and end with this committee’s initiatives. It will be forever ongoing. There will always be something we can improve for the people and businesses that reside here. If I were a betting person, I’d definitely put my money on this crew addresses the needs and working towards a solution. Go get ‘em!

The Arkansas Scholars Committee is a continuation of a long-standing program that encourages academic achievement by high school students (grades 9-12), while strengthening the connection between local businesses and the students.
Mark Lloyd, University of Arkansas-Fort Smith
The Diversity Committee works to ensure that opportunities for leadership, training, and enrichment are inclusive and representative of the diversity of the Fort Smith Region.
Sherry Sims, Rheem Manufacturing
The Special Awards and Recognition Committee seeks opportunities to recognize students, faculty and staff that are the bright stars of our schools and deserve recognition for the hard work and effort they do to surpass expectations.
Pat Eller & Ron Orick, University of Arkansas-Fort Smith
The Teacher Appreciation Breakfast Enrichment Committee coordinates events to show appreciation to public and private school teachers.
George McGill, The McGill Insurance Agency /Allstate
The Education Committee encourages elementary students to achieve a 3.0 grade point average and high attendance rates by creating a catalyst for academic achievement through incentives. Students will learn to understand the value of education and the role it plays in opportunities for success in life.

Quality of Place
The purpose behind the Quality of Place committee is to work to impove areas that need attention in order to retain and attract individuals and companies to the Greater Fort Smith Region.
Ken Kupchick, Crawford-Sebastian Community Development Council, Inc.
The Art Matters Committee works to revive and enrich community life through arts, history and culture. This alliance will represent the Greater Fort Smith Region on a state level and assist with funding opportunities.
Philip Merry, Gallagher Merry
Fort Smith, “Christmas Honors” was inspired by Wreaths Across America, which places Christmas wreaths on gravesites at Arlington National Cemetery. The wreaths honor those who have given their lives to provide the freedoms we enjoy in our beloved Nation. The cemetery is transformed into a vision of beauty, and the families of those buried at Arlington take comfort in seeing the respect that is shown to their grandfathers, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, friends and other fallen heroes who so loved our Country.
In 2009, the Education and Quality of Place Division of the Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce decided to transform the Fort Smith National Cemetery, and a local program was born- “Christmas Honors”. With the help of over 1,000 volunteers, 12,000 wreaths were placed on every fallen hero’s headstone at the cemetery.

The Curb Appeal Committee works to enhance the curb appeal of the Greater Fort Smith Region by identifying areas that need aesthetic attention, developing a network of resources, and affecting positive change through community communication and involvement.
Heather Morris, Security Escrow & Title and Jacob Gorham, Corrugated Services
The Green and Clean Committee works to bring greater awareness of the environmental and financial benefits of going green to the community and local businesses. Educational and awareness-oriented programs benefitting industry, small business, commercial, and residential will play a vital role in the success of this initiative.
Amanda Daniels, Arvest Bank
Make It Happen Committee strives to combine regional events, activities and festivals, particularly small events, into larger and longer events. By doing so, the city will increase tourism and increase participating organization’s revenue. It will also allow regional companies to enhance their marketing exposure.
Bryan Merry, Gallagher Merry
The committee created a mentoring program that will connect young professionals with regional leaders. By initiating this relationship, young professional receive advice and experiences that will help him/her achieve their career goals and the mentor gains a perspective into the skills and network of a young leader in the region.
