The Arkansas Society of Certified Public Accountants (ASCPA) Public Service Award for Firms aims to recognize firms for their public service contributions on the local, state, or national level.  The award intends to encourage more CPA firms to initiate or increase their community activities, publicize those activities, and reinforce the profession’s reputation for commitment to the public.

The American Cancer Society is seeking companies who would like to participate in the life-changing Relay For Life event in North Sebastian County. The event will be held on Friday, June 15, on the campus of the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m., June 16.

The Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce's Wellness Committee worked with member businesses to compile a listing of businesses that have structured wellness programs in the work place.  Including with the listing is an outline of the individual wellness program.  Workplace wellness programs are recognized by more and more companies for their value in improving health and well-being of their employees.

What is the Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce Annual “Healthy Workplace” Award?

The Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce “Healthy Workplace” awards will be presented an annual Chamber event after the nominations are judged and scored.  These awards were created to extend appreciation and to recognize businesses that show a commitment to health and wellness.  They also serve to publicly promote the importance of a healthy workplace in the Greater Fort Smith Region.

The team of creative individuals making this year’s Young Actors Guild’s summer musical something unforgettable is being led by Missy Gipson.  She and Brenda Yellvington have pulled together every resource known to man in efforts of bringing Broadway to the River Valley.  For the first time ever people in the area will be able to see the longest running musical on Broadway, Les Miserables.

The Miracle Riders will be cruising into Fort Smith, Arkansas on Saturday May 5th.
Businessman Scott Ressmeyer, native of Columbus, GA, launched the Ride for Miracles fundraising event in 2009. Ressmeyer and thirteen friends are riding across country, 48 states in 21 days, to raise awareness and funds for the needs and services supported by Children’s Miracle Network at the Medical Center. To date, The Ride for Miracles has raised more than $280,000 to purchase equipment at The Medical Center.

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Arkansas has announced that Blaylock Heat & Air has earned first place in the category of Mechanical Commercial $1-5 Million in ABC's Excellence in Construction awards for the Norhtside High School project.  Blaylock accepted the award on April 21st during the annual 'Excellence in Construction' celebreation at the Wyndham Riverfront in North Little Rock, AR.

The Fort Smith Convention & Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce this year’s GRIT Award recipients. The GRIT Awards were presented last night at the MovieLounge, the new dinner-cinema-event space. Over 100 people attended the premier, opening event for the MovieLounge, Fort Smith’s newest attraction/restaurant partner. This gathering of friends was to showcase the accomplishments these folks have made to assist our community and party in celebration of a job well done in the local hospitality industry.

Mayor Sandy Sanders and the City of Fort Smith Board of Directors will conduct its third neighborhood meeting designed to encourage interactive dialogue with citizens in neighborhoods where they live. The June 14 meeting will feature staff reports about current or upcoming projects impacting citizens in Ward 3.

Projects designed to reduce likelihood of flooding to commence soon:

Neighborhood improvements
By the end of April, work should commence on five separate neighborhood projects that are designed to reduce the frequency of residential and school flooding and correct channel erosion.

The board of directors on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 approved authorization for a $1.099 million contract to improve drainage in neighborhoods that have reported instances of flooding in recent years.

John Lewellen Sr. simply loved being outside. It didn’t matter what he was doing; as long as he was outdoors, he was a happy man.

“He just would not be inside for anything,” said his son, John Lewellen Jr. of Fort Smith. “He wanted to be outside with nature.”

Twelve teams of students from Northside and Southside High Schools presented their year-long entrepreneurial business results April 16 at the fifth annual High School Entrepreneurship Contest at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith.

The two-semester program, which is supported by UAFS, involved student teams enrolled in the Enterprise Management/Entrepreneurship course at their respective high schools, as well as community business volunteers, local entrepreneur and business owner Craig Pair, and Dave Robertson, director of the UAFS Family Enterprise Center.
